For those who it may concern, or not, Western States 100 starts in 1 hour and 45 minutes. It's ultrarunning's Superbowl...yes, I am not there either, I was suppose to be there to pace someone I've been coaching, however, circumstances changed my fortune -- Win knows some of the details, if you have 5 hours and want to drink 10 beers, I'll tell you all about it -- or if you just wanna have 10 beers, we don't have to talk about, just drink the beer.

There are several runners from the Oregon/Washington region running to include many from Portland. You can track the race on line at http://www.ws100.com/webcast/home.html

This year is going to be one of the toughest years, the snow pack is above normal and the runner will have snow to deal with in the High Country, which is the first 30 miles, really the snow will be around for the first 16 miles, the Canyon Sections from mile 40-55 are going to brutal, high temps in those canyons will be up to 110F with a cool 90-95F at the tops, there are three brutal climbs out of those canyons with Devil's Thumb being the first and the worst...however, each canyon takes it's toll. If runners can make it Foresthill (mile 62) and to there pacers, they have a much higher chance of finishing...just make it to dark and cooler temps.

Do they have a cut off time or do you get credit for just finishing? I know the goal for some is to complete it in 24 hours.

Wow, the webcast is pretty darn cool. It's gotta be hurting by now. Looks like there are a bunch of people very close together.

No Scott Jurek this year, so who will it be?

Nikki Kimball is right up there.

About 35 miles to go...

The goal is to finish under 30 hours, if you finish after 30 hours you won't be recorded as a finisher. If you finish under 30 hours one get's a gold belt buckle, if one finishis under 24 hours, you get a silver belt buckle. Note to self....if you fall behind 24 hour pace...best cash it in and work on just finishing under 30 hours.

This year's heat is oppresive, one of the worst years in some time...the race has just begun...the word it the race doesn't start until mile 62, anything can and will happen.
