Alrighty since the fall is officially over and many people have done their marathons for the fall/winter I thought i'd get the ball rolling for those training for a spring/early summer marathon...

I'm training for the Newport Marathon that's on June 2nd...I'll be attempting to follow Hal Higdon's intermediate 1 marathon training program which is an 18 week program...Training for me doesn't officially start until January 30th but might as well start slowly building up and get going on the training...

So...for the week ending today..Sunday 1/8/12

Monday 1/2....Cross Training...rode bike 10 miles
Tuesday 1/3...4 mile run in Tryon Creek with hills
Wednesday 1/4...3 mile run in Mary S Young with 6 60 second pick ups
Thursday...1/5...4 miles in Tryon Creek...easy run
Friday...1/6...off
Saturday..1/7...4 miles...Oaks Bottom/springwater...easy training run
Sunday...1/8...5 mile long run..

Weekly total running...20 miles

I am slowly building up my mileage after coming off of a sprained ankle injury...For the first week of official training for hal's program the schedule calls for an 8 mile long run and then build up to 20 miles later in the program...felt good this week...

Feel free to join in this thread for those of you training for a spring marathon... :D

I was just thinking about starting this thread. Thanks, Doug.

I had one of those wacky weeks where every run felt easy and effortless. I am attributing it to a nightly ice cream habit.

Monday- off (definitely needed)
Tues- 10 miles easy on Newton Hills-- out-and-back (BM course) ave 7:53
Wed- 12 miles with 6.5 at Tempo (5.5 at 6:37 pace, then 1 mi w alt 0.25 mi at 6:20 and 0.25 mi at 7:00)
Thurs- 6 miles recovery
Friday- 9 miles easy (7:35)
Sat- 9 miles easy w 8 x 100 m strides (7:28)
Sun- 12.25 miles with 2 x 2 mi at 6:33 ave and then one mile at 6:19

~58 miles

Not a huge week mileage-wise, but solid in terms of workouts. Let's hope it continues. For 15 more weeks!

Was sick this week so missed two days. Boston Training is going well other than that.

Week of jan 2

Mon: 8.7 mile recovery run

Tues: 12 total with 10 @ Marathon Pace and last two at tempo (6:49, 6:50, 6:50, 6:50, 6:50, 6:51, 6:50, 6:46, 6:27, 6:24) Felt great but was sick.

Wed: Sick

Thursday: Sick

Friday: 13.1 miles with a few quicker miles at the end around MP (didn't feel great) Played around in newton hills

Saturday: 8.5 recovery (7:50 pace - need to run recovery slower)

Sunday: 17.5 miles at 7:50 pace (first 6 at 8:00 min pace) (felt a little tired from the missed two days and then ramped up mileage)

Total: 59.6

Would have hit high 70's if it hadn't been for being sick. 14 weeks until Boston.....

I'm running Boston this year. I'm going to try a less traditional plan. Trying to mix tri training and long runs with the hope of being in shape for 26.2 miles but not sacrificing too much for next summer's tri season. So come late Feb. and March if anyone in Pdx is doing long runs around 8 min pace I'll be looking to tag along.

You're right, Bill-- 14 weeks until Boston. I typed '15' above. Would have been a week late for the race.
I am so excited to see Susan, Carin and everyone else coming for the weekend. I secured the Sat before through Wed off of work.

Week of jan 10

Down time in the hotel room so figured I'd post.

Mon: 8 miles easy run at 7:51 pace

Tues: 8 miles with 5 mile race simulation 6:00, 6:06, 5:59, 6:00, 5:49 (originally this was a 5K test 18:35 through 5k seemed relatively easy so I pushed on faster for 5 with negative split.

Wed: 11 miles at 7:42 pace. Somewhat hilly route (a tad tired)

Thursday: 5 mile recovery run at 8:24 pace

Friday: 11.6 with 8 miles at 6:46 pace (6:47, 6:52, 6:53, 6:49, 6:49, 6:50, 6:47, 6:21) Goal was no faster than 6:46 pace until the last mile (Avg Heart Rate: 152 Max: 165)

Saturday: AM 18.5 (7:36 pace) ran last couple of miles with Albert. PM 5 mile recovery at 8:20 pace

Sunday: 10.4 miles @OTC not sure what pace was.

Nice week, bill...

I'll go ahead and post a day early, too, because i'll have a pretty busy day tomorrow and don't know if i'll have time to post...

so the week of 1/9-1/15...

Monday...5 miles
Tuesday...3 miles
Wednesday...4 miles
Thursday...off
Friday...off
Saturday...4 miles
Sunday...6-7 miles (projected)

Weekly total mileage...22-23 (projected)

Good week for me...the buildup continues until the 'official' start of training on the 30th for me...Monday started off a good week with a run in Forest Park...

As I mentioned in the first post I'm looking to do one of Hal Higdon's program's this go around to see how it compares to pfitzinger's...I was thinking of doing the intermediate 1 program of Hal's but am thinking of bumping myself up to the intermediate 2 program because the 2nd program has 3 20 mile runs in it compared to just 2 in the intermediate 1 program...I think having the extra 20 miler run in there would be a good confidence booster for me...

Anyways...about 20 weeks of training until Newport...looking forward with the continued build up and then the official start of training on the 30th!!

I'm happy to see this post started! After watching the Olympic Marathon Trials yesterday I was so pumped up I made my final decision to train for the Vancouver USA Marathon on 6/17. I'll need to do some late hills in my training runs to get ready for this race-maybe I need LT's nightly ice cream habit to help me along!

Marathon training hasn't officially started for me yet but I'm trying to get a jump start on building a good base and I'd really like to get faster. I think I'm going to use Hal Higdon's Advanced I training schedule only because it includes speedwork and hills, things I think I probably need to improve. I'm learning as I go!

Week of 1/9-15
Monday-day off
Tuesday-4 miles of speedwork: 10x400 on the track: 7:23, 7:39, 7:35, 7:42, 7:36, 7:47, 7:36, 7:44, 7:36, 7:05
Wednesday-5 miles
Thursday-off
Friday-3 miles
Saturday-yoga
Sunday-about to go run 9 miles

My back was bothering me this week which is why I took two days off. Feels better today. I'm excited to start training and really hopeful for a new PR!
The race is long, and in the end, it's only with yourself.

I'm pretty good at decoding workouts but I must be having a brain cramp because I don't understand this one. These can't be mile splits because that would equal to 40 400's? Is this your per mile pace? If so, then it's around 1:50/lap, right?

I'm relatively new to speedwork so I may not be writing it correctly. Definitely NOT mile splits-I'd be thrilled if I could run a mile that fast. :) It's the pace/mile that my GPS says I'm doing when I run 400 meters. I would do a 400 then jog for about 200, then do another one.

Great to see some solid weeks early in the spring marathon training block. Tiff, I think Fidel is having a brain cramp (or as I would see it, an ice cream headache) because it is easier to put intervals in context as time per interval, not pace. Not super-important for you personally, but helpful for others to gauge where you are at.

This is a tough time of year to run, so I took these bones to the left coast (south-left coast) for a long weekend. The half on Sunday in Phx was the target race. The other days were fairly uneventful.

Mon- 7 recovery (~8:45)
Tues- 10 w/ 4x 5 min (start at HMP and drop to 10kp by end). 6:30/mi (too fast), 6:32/mi, 6:25/mi, 6:18/mi
Wed- 7 easy -- 8:40/mi
Thurs- off
Fri- 3.5 easy
Sat- 6.7 w 6 x 200 @ 10kp (~6:20)
Sun- 16 miles total. PF Chang's Phx marathon. 1:27:15. PR

total miles- ~50

That half came off a week that was one of those effortless weeks where everything felt easier than Lindsay Lohan getting off a jail sentence. This week wasn't as good, but no complaints. The weather on Sunday was absolutely perfect. ~45 and cloudy at the start. No wind. I really had no idea what kind of shape I was in. My first half was at a 6:42/ave. I felt great. Miles 7-9 were also at around a 6:43 pace.

I did not have the feeling I usually have at 9 miles ("f* this. I'm quitting and going for a beer and burrito"). I was yelling at myself to pick it up. Next miles 6:31, 6:22, 6:31, 6:32 and last 0.15 at 6:00.

My annoying habit of being conservative usually serves me well in that I negative-split and burn it all at the end. Today I think it failed me. I really need to be more aggressive. Tim, you should have been in Phoenix!

I have many improvements to make, but at least I can say that my performance was better than the HS football team I watched tonight (aka the Packers).

Sidenote: Regarding the Packers--don't call/text/FB me. My pillow is still soaked with tears. I wish I were kidding.

LT, are you aiming for sub-3 at Boston?
And when are you moving back to Pdx?

Yes, now would be a good time to bring up the challenge that I talked to Melissa about. Who will break the 3:00 barrier first - Lisa T or Melissa (assuming SHE doesn't break something else AGAIN in the meantime)? Ladies & gentlemen, place your bets!!!
