Elton John's Funeral For A Friend ain't bad
Yeah, I was thinking of that one this afternoon!
I did a little research on Rush instrumentals 1978-present tonight (a real chore, I know)
Here's the list:
"La Villa Strangiato (An Exercise in Self-Indulgence)" from Hemispheres
"YYZ" from Moving Pictures
~They then went 10 years without an instrumental~
"Where's My Thing?" from Roll The Bones
"Leave That Thing Alone" from Counterparts
(1993) I like the allusion to the previous title. These guys are very creative and have a great sense of
"Limbo" from Test For Echo
Their next album, Vapor Trails
, had no instrumentals, but they made up for it with three (!) on the following one:
"The Main Monkey Business",
& "Malignant Narcissism" from Snakes & Arrows
"YYZ" is a masterpiece and number one, and all of these are good, but the cream of the rest of the crop are:
"La Villa Strangiato", which, despite its subtitle and 9:36 length, is solid from start to finish;
"Hope" which is a beautiful Zeppelin-esque Alex Lifeson solo acoustic tune;
and my favorite, "Leave That Thing Alone", which showcases the amazing talent of all three members of the band, with some especially good bass work from Geddy Lee.
Dang, I need an iPod!
