But Milly is a "future lizard" so no need to count her unless / until she joins.

The way the rules are stated, if Milly joins before the next Summer Series race, we will her score into the standings for race 7.

This might actually apply for Justin Sunnarborg, since Elle said he has officially joined now - but I know he has been out for other races.  Elle or Justin - let me know if there is a past race I need to go back to and adjust the standings for.

With only one race left, I figured it might be time to motivate those of you on the participation "bubble" to get out for the next race.  I ran through an example earlier of how the top 10 slots are going to be determined this year.  Step 1 is to grab the top 5 for total score.  On the women's side, through 7 races, that looks like it will be Chris, Angela, Elle, Theresa and Sonya.  Since Chris is the only one in the top 5 who has participated in 5 races, there is still some room for someone else to displace someone in the top 5 (for example, if Shannon scores 70 points in the final race and Sonya doesn't show up).

Things get interesting when we then move to picking the next 5 based on participation.  Through 7 races, it looks like the 4 people highlighted in orange would make that cut for participating in 4 or 5 races each.  But picking spot number 5 has us looking at people who have participated in 3 races.  There are 4 people highlighted in blue that have done 3 races, but only 1 spot left to fill... so we then look at the place to pick the one remaining spot.  That means Shannon would currently get spot number 10 on the women's side.

There are obviously a lot of changes that could still happen, depending on who shows up for race #8.  The top 5 could change, or someone could change the number of races they have done and no longer be in a tie for number of races they have participated in.  Hypothetically, if only Shannon and Charissa show up for the final race (and Shannon finishes in front so she gets 100 and Charissa gets 20 points), the shuffle in the standings would be that Shannon moves into the top 5 and bumps Sonya down to 6th. Sonya has only done 3 races, so would outscore others tied at 3 races, but since Charissa would then have 4 races, she would join Julz, Leigh and Tiffany in the tie at 4 races for a slot in the top 5 participants.

Make sense?  And more importantly, does it make you motivated to get out there for the final race in Oregon City?

Cool, thanks for the detailed explanation, Torrey!

Glad that was helpful, Charissa.

What I can see in the current standings heading into race #8:

  • any of the females who have currently done 4 races would ensure themselves one of the slots for participation
  • at 5 races, Stacey is locked into one of the 5 participation slots - although the final race would ensure she is at the top of that list (which is important in the prize distribution rotation)
  • any of those who have done 3 races have the potential to move into contention (once again, it depends on who shows up) but getting to 4 races
  • the top 3 overall have a large enough buffer that no one can bump them out of the top 5.  So depending on who shows up, there is the potential for Melissa or Shannon to move into the top 5 and bump Theresa or Sonya out

Oh how I do love to think about all the various scenarios... and to think of the twist the final race might add... someone might die of dysentery out on the Oregon Trail! ;)

I didn't want to leave the men trying to figure out what's happening on that side, but it's a pretty similar situation where we get into a tie for that final spot (all of the names in blue are tied with 2 races each).

The top 5 have the potential to change.  But even if someone bumps one of the top 5 down, they have all done enough races to be on top of the participation scoring.  For example, Tom is one race away from setting a perfect 8 for 8 streak (nice work, Tom!).  He has the potential to better one of the 5 races that count in his score (recall that we only score the best 5 of 8 races in the overall score), but even if someone not at 5 races showed up and moved into the top 5, Tom is assured the number 6 slot since no one else can outscore him on the participation side.

A hypothetical scenario for race 8.  Only Danimal and Brian show up.  And since this is hypothetical, let's say that Dan beats Brian, so he gets 100 points and Brian gets 20.  That is enough for Dan to move to 4th place, moving Joe and Tom down one (and sadly Tom moves out of the top 5 with that shuffle).  But Tom would still top the participation score with 7 races, and Brian would then move into a tie with Rizzo at 3 races each, which would mean they get spots 9 and 10 in the standings.  So even though Brian is currently 21st in the score-based standings, anyone who has done at least 2 races so far has a legitimate shot at one of the prize-winning positions.  What will happen in Oregon City on August 7???

P.S.  Even if you don't think you have a shot at a spot on the award podium, this should still be a fun final race - so show up!

One other note:  Amanda Rice joined right after race 6, which means that I will update the standings to give her points for her 2nd place finish at the Backyard Half

Not seeing any edits to the results from race 8 I posted above, I updated the first post with the overall results.  If you notice any issues (mainly, races that I missed you being at), let me know and we can get this corrected before prizes are distributed.  For now it looks like our winners will be the following, based on top 5 scores, followed by the next 5 based on races competed in.

Men
1. Torrey Lindbo (491)
2. Adam Divergilio (462)
3. Darren Moore (453)
4. Joe Dudman (359)
5. Tom Fuchs (307)
6. Rick Lovett (6 races)
7. David Buczkowski (5 races)
8. Daniel Bartosz (3 races)
9. Raghav Wusirika (3 races)
10. Matt Rizzo (3 races)

Women
1. Chris Kimbrough (492)
2. Angela Lindbo (425)
3. Elle Davis (301)
4. Theresa Hailey (284)
5. Sonya Wilkerson (271)
6. Stacey Lee (6 races)
7. Tiffany McClean (5 races)
8. Shannon Sexton (4 races)
9. Mollie Butler (4 races)
10. Julie Thomas (4 races)

Note that Leigh and Charissa also did 4 races, so the places were determined based on overall series score for those in the tie at 4 races.
