I fear that if this year's race is held at all, it will be on a course that's even less "interesting" than usual. It sucks that the city doesn't seem to want to embrace the event and use it to showcase their city. I've long said that they could have a route that really highlights many of the different neighborhoods, using more of the bridges and encompassing all four quadrants of the city. Those hopes appear to be long gone now. We might be left with 13 miles out HWY 30, turn around and 13 miles back.

Yippee.

That's really sad.

A patient of mine mentioned this to me yesterday and said they wanted them to keep it all in North Portland.  I have no idea how much truth there is to that, but I thought I'd contribute to the rumor mill. It'll be interesting, regardless.

Sheesh, read the OregonLive article...  I really cannot stand Les Smith. He's an arrogant bully.

Dumb question... Can't the race just hire cops from the suburbs? Or is there some rule against that?

I don't know the ins and outs of the fees that events pay the city of portland, but I found this quote from Les Smith considerably displeasing.

"They literally are raping the events that are in town to get money from them," he said".

Literally no longer "literally" means literally any more.

That quote right there is the one from Les that makes me personally no longer want to participate in or support this event again.

Will be interesting to see what changes are made to the course.

I believe Les's attitude is what's gotten the event into this predicament.  Honestly I'm hopeful other RD's are watching this go down and see an opportunity to start a new Portland Marathon.

Dept of Justice is now launching an investigation into the Portland Marathon's financials and 501© status. Karma might finally be coming for Les.

Just read on KOIN this morning that they agreed to a course change. No info yet on new course. Should start a poll to see what they come up with. I'm going with an out and back somewhere on Marine Drive.

I was going to guess that the race was being restructured into the Portland Waterfront Marathon, where runners will run clockwise between the Steel Bridge and Tilikum Crossing six times.  The Portland Marathon wouldn't be the Portland Marathon without the real threat of a train delay, so the start and finish will be on Naito just past the tracks, thus offering two opportunities for delay and maximization of the return on your $150 investment.
