Used Shoe Drive for the Needy (2019)
Posted 16 January 2019 - 02:13 PM
In 2018, we collected a total of 533 pairs of shoes. That is up from 410 in 2017 and 268 in 2016. I don't remember if we were collecting shoes prior to 2016. What this means however, is that in three years, we have shod 1,211 people. That is an absolute mountain of shoes.
To repeat, our record, set last year, is 533 pairs. At the moment, Oct 12, we are at 414 pairs for 2019.
What's needed are wearable shoes. That's different from "runnable shoes." After your favorites have lived out their lives on the roads or trails, they still have hundreds of miles of walking in them, and there are people for whom that is an enormous blessing. Furthermore, they don't have to running shoes. Any comfortable walking footwear works.
If you want to contribute, bring your used footwear to me at any track workout, race, or First Friday, or arrange for me to collect it by any other means. Don't worry if they're a bit (or more than a bit) muddy. Also, your definition of "worn out" isn't most people's. In more than 1000 donations over the years, I've only rejected one pair as too worn, and in that case, the sole fell off when I poked at it. We now even have uses for soccer cleats and spikes, if they are still usable for sports.

Today's first Stumptown Race brought in 35 pairs of shoes. That puts us nearly on pace to beat last year's record. As always, keep them coming!

This was a great week for shoes. In addition to the 35 pairs that came in at Lents, we got 27 more at Duniway, on Tuesday. That's 62 in 4 days--enough that I had to make two delivery trips in rapid succession in order to keep my car from being swamped! Keep making me do that!!!!
