Air Pollution Update:

The AP reported that Beijing's air pollution index for particulate matter, a major pollutant, fell to 96 on Monday and 90 on Tuesday. Anything below 50 is graded as good air quality.

Hurdler Lolo Jones saw firsthand the effects of pollution during a previous trip to Shanghai, China.

"It affected my clothes more so than my performance," said Jones, a medal contender in the 100-meter hurdles who now lives in Baton Rouge, La. "I was washing out one of my shirts, and like straight black stuff was coming out of it. It was definitely pollution."

Other athletes are experiencing the impacts to allergies and sinus conditions, along with discolored phlegm (a vital part of the body's air-filtering system).

Jones and other American athletes are unsure about what to expect in Beijing one breath to the next, but the current U.S. national champion is sure of one thing.

"If I have to choke gallons of smoke to run - I'm going to run," Jones said. "It's the Olympics."

The Jamaican bobsled team finally takes gold, but suspicions are raised when they do it in the Summer Olympics

I just learned that the fastest female marathoner this year (2:22:38) cannot run in the Olympic marathon due to her age. She is Chinese and only 18 years old (DOB 04/01/1990). Her name is Yingying Zhang and she has been entered to run the 5,000/10,000m double. Her PR's are 15:06.08 and 31:17.30 respectively (from last year). She sounds like someone to put on the radar.

Why isn't 18 old enough? I know it's kinda young for some people to get into marathoning, but I have a suspicion that she's been training for the 2008 olympics her whole life. What's the age limit in the marathon?

My Beijing article printed; I forgot to link. One route to it is this; it got picked up by an MIT science blogger. The original link is in the blog somewhere....

The photo's mine too. That makes me, officially a (not very rich) National Geogrpahic photographer. Looks cool on the resume. The photo is not from Eugene, btw.

I predict:

...more Russians, Romanians, and Jamaicans will be caught doping or for doping violations, e.g. switching piss, throughout this year and some will be ordered to return Olympic medals. Also, Russian track and field officials will face official sanctions and their athletics body deregistration by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) due to their systematic doping violations.

Wow, rightly or wrongly, it does look like the IAAF was out to nail the Russians as a team, not just as individuals. For those who didn't read the link, that has to do with the timing of the announcement. They've been suspicous since sometime in 2006, but just released the DNA results now, when it's just barely too late for the Russians to substitute. That almost has to have been deliberate, to prevent 'em from simply rotating in another runner who'd been giving fake urine samples.

DNA. To bad I didn't think of that one in that context ages ago. It would have made a nice part of a science fiction story!
