You want a race report? Ok, you asked for it. Below is a ridiculously long email I sent to my brother and some other old-skool running buddies on the evening of July 4. (slightly edited to be suitable for this message board. wouldn't want anyone hitting that "report" button on me, now...)

I ran a marathon this morning. 2 loops around Sauvie Island, an asphalt road around a completely flat farming/rural community next to the Columbia River and Columbia slough. I wasn't sure what to expect, having only done four long runs in the past 8 weeks as a buildup, including a 12mi tempo at 6:25 pace, a half marathon at 6:01 pace, a 15mi tempo at 6:45 pace, and most importantly a 23mi at 6:56 pace two & a 1/2 weeks ago. My weekly mileage has ranged from 35-55 during those 8 weeks, with one long week of 66 which ended with the 23miler. I only ran 5 of the 9 days leading up to the marathon due to some extreme calf pain & cramping in both legs - I rested to try to calm that down, and for the most part it worked.
The race: thought I would start off with Wendy Terris from my running club, as she had finished in 2:44 here last year and ran 2:50 in the Eugene marathon in late April. I told her I wanted to run 6:20-6:30 pace the first loop. Turns out I felt great running 6:20 pace and she stuck more to 6:30 pace, so we only ran the first 2 miles together. My first half was 83:40 (6:23).
I started to worry, as calf tightness began to set in early in the second loop. I altered to even more of a shuffle stride than normal and ended up taking eight 200mg ibuprofen during that loop, not advisable, but WTF, it helped. The calves never cramped, just felt tight, which was a small miracle considering how they felt just 8 days before the race. So the calves were a non-issue really. But I knew by 16 my second loop would be slower than my first, but still wanted to hang on for a sub-2:50. I thought I could do it. I thought I could do it. I could not do it.
The marathon started at 6:45; the half marathon 1 hour later, and included lots of walkers. From 2 miles into the second loop to the end I was passing walkers, then runners, so by the end I was catching people running a decent pace at 1:50 or so. Passing the walkers was fine (they took up all of the right lane, I ran along the double yellow or in the oncoming lane as needed), except that the 5 aid stations around the loop had been completely mobbed. Some were out of cups. Some were low on water. Not enough volunteers. To get anything to drink you had to stop, crowd behind the water table, and pour it yourself. Thankfully a couple guys from my club who weren't running cycled up next to me around mile 18 and handed me a water bottle, which I drank most of. It got better later in the loop, but not until near the end, as I had passed so many people the aid station was still functioning normally. I did not get enough fluids loop 2, but I don't think it adversely affected me more than 30 seconds or so total. The entire course is exposed, and there was no cloud cover. Overnight low was 60, start of marathon probably 65 then 75 by the end. Could have been A LOT worse, but it felt scorching those last few miles in the sun. A slight breeze helped at times, but not much. I only drank about 16 oz. of water/electrolyte the final 8 miles. I ate 4 full GU's during the race, starting at mile 7.
I cracked somewhere past 21, and told myself to try to hold 7:00s the final four miles. I thought I could do it. I thought I could do it. I could not do it. The final 5 were tough, and the final 2 were as hard as they come. I was cooked. I was fried. I was like an egg out there on the asphalt. I had NOTHING. Joe Dudman showed up to run a "stealth" marathon (didn't tell anyone ahead of time), and ran halves approx. 87+82 (that's the way to do it), and passed me at 23.5. I had NO response. He wanted to get the marathon monkey off his back - even though he's a 72-minute half marathon guy, his marathon PR was 3:07. He ran 2:49 today. I shuffled through the aid station at 24.5, took some fluids (the most I'd had during the 2nd loop), and death marched it to the gravel road and up to the finish. Never walked of course, but was passing 1:50 half marathon runners in slow motion by the end. One of them may have even out"kick"ed me; I'm not sure; the final 1/2 mile was a blur. Second half was 87:23 (6:40). So a 4-minute difference between the 2 halves. Not ideal, but it could have been a LOT worse, and I was happy with it considering lack of sufficient long runs. This was the 12th fastest marathon of the 19 I've run. But it's the fastest of the 4 I've done since my "comeback" began in January 2006. I didn't run a single marathon from 1999-2005, so this is my fastest time since Portland '98 (2:44:53). I can feel the fact that I'm 35, not 25 anymore.
They claim this course USATF certified, but the mile marker placement was erratic. A number of miles on the loop were short, and they seemed to make up for it during the last mile, a long loose gravel road containing the only significant uphill on the course. The final 1.22mi was ridiculously long, even though I was absolutely fried and it was on gravel. See my split for mile 13 (when I was still running strong) and you'll see the same - that single mile was probably 20-35 seconds long. The final 0.22 was actually downhill, and partly on asphalt. That fifth mile was probably a good 15-20 seconds long alone. I wonder why can't they get the markers right within a course that is overall certified. Even the Portland marathon (another certified course and a major event) has mismarked miles. No excuse for it. I don't even want to guess what kind of time adjustments to make below. But I can say for sure that miles 2, 3, 13, 19, 20, and 26 were all mismeasured.
