This run has  been on my list to do this with the TRL, the timing has always been rough, since I'm so brittle. Once again   I'm hoping this year will be the year, has it been decided to be on Sunday the 31st or Monday the 1st?  I ran Germantown to Newberry Sunday on WW, which got me thinking.

We haven't officially discussed it but it's been the 31st for the past many years. I don't expect that to change this year

Doing it on the 31st allows one to party hard on New Year's Eve.   But, starting the year with a 50k would be cool.   Too bad it's not an official race.   I could run the 50k on Jan 1 and have my yearly marathon out of the way.   (But then what would I do?)

I hope I actually can run this event this upcoming year.   I vote for the 31st.  Then we could keep the proper order:   Purge.....Splurge

The Purge & (then) Splurge is a New Years Eve tradition.  It will definitely happen, and it will be on Dec 31.  I haven't yet looked at what day of the week that is, but if running Wildwood end-to-end is on your "to do", then get the morning of Dec 31 blocked out on your calendar.

I just came up with a very good idea.   We've always run this from Newberry to the zoo.   I'd be curious to run it the other way.   Anyone else?   Here is where the idea comes into play:  as long as there are at least 2 people willing to run from each end, we could exchange car keys and meet after the run somewhere.   Confused yet?  Here is an example:

Markiemo and I want to run from zoo to Newberry.   We'd park my car at the zoo and start running.   Torrey and Danimal want to run the opposite direction.  They park at Newberry and start running.  When we meet on the trail we'd exchange keys.

So, let's say that there is a disparity between the southbound runners and northbound runners.   USE YOUR MATH SKILLS!   There's nothing in the constitution or state laws or lizard bylaws stating that the two teams have to start at the same time.  In fact, this could be a fun competition, kind of a prediction.   Pursuit format if you will.

Whadda ya think?

The key swap method works as a way to avoid the carpool.  Although it still requires coordination, unless the people starting at each end carpool with each other to get there. Otherwise (using your example), if you and Markiemo both drive separately to the zoo, and Danimal and I drove separately to Newberry, if you and I trade keys, then your car and my car are theoretically waiting at the finish.  While Danimal and Markiemo's cars will still be at the other end.  Anyhow, just pointing that out, since carpool logistics are still there.  Although I am guessing there is a way you could work a carpool between groups running each direction at the start and then people could still meet at the finish point and a designated person going the other direction could meet at the other end and shuttle the crew to the start point.

It seems like more logistics than I care to organize, since I like the group photo and mass start from the same spot.  And I imagine that with 12/31 being a Sunday this year, there will be an even larger than usual turn out.  Making sure 50 people aren't confused about where to meet, have them be there on time to carpool and all get out to one location is hard enough.  But if you find a willing partner to go reverse, do it.

One way to avoid some carpool logistics - Uber to the start.  That's a little harder if you leaving your car somewhere off the beaten path (like the top of Oil/Gas/Firelane 7), but it can work well from Lower MacLeay or the zoo.

Dan - it sounds like the main reason for your proposal is simply to run it from the zoo to Newberry? That seems like it would be the easier way to do it, since you get all of the serious climbing out of the way at the beginning and don't nearly finish a marathon before climbing up and over Pittock and then the hills in the Arboretum.  I was going to do that this past summer, but the road closure on Newberry kept the people I was going to run with from driving up.  One of these days I will run zoo to Newberry, but it won't be P&S.

Speaking of Newberry... I was reminded to check and see what the current status is.  It is still closed due to that landslide from last winter.

https://multco.us/ro...t-road-closures

You can get to the Wildwood TH, but you have to come in off Skyline.  The portion that washed out is between Hwy 30 and the Wildwood TH.  You essentially need to drive up Germantown to Skyline and then drop down Newberry.  That will make logistics a little harder, since it is a whole lot easier to just drive down Hwy 30 for anyone coming from Saltzman - that 15-16 mile run option is probably the largest group.

I ran the far end of Forest Park today.  Some notes for the P and S runners:  yea, you have to access Newberry from Skyline.   No go from dirty 30.   If you use Germantown, you have to keep going under the St. John's bridge; don't take the first exit before the bridge, you have no choice but to go across to St. John's (I made that mistake once and used up a lot of profanities).

Lots of roots in the first mile or so, so don't draft off the runner in front of you!  Leave space.   I fell hard after tripping on a root but my lab puppy licked my face and cheered me up.

I saw a coyote today, about 100 yards away.  Fortunately I had my dogs leashed.  They would have wanted to play.   Wiley E doesn't play.

One silver lining with regard to Newberry being closed:  much less traffic barreling past the trail head.

I hope to be there.   Even though I haven't done any long runs since Oct 22, I'm still leaning toward the full distance.

Does anyone have suggestions for post-run gathering places for the various distances?  The timing doesn't really work to have people running to Saltzman (16 miles) waiting anywhere until people running 25 or the full 30 miles - so I would suggest some different meet-up places depending on distance.

For those ending at lower Saltzman, a couple options that might be fun.  1). Driving up Germantown to the Skyline Tavern.  Or 2). you could head over the St Johns Bridge to the John Street Cafe (rather than heading into NW).

For those doing 25 (ending at Lower MacLeay), what about Kenny & Zukes?  It will be noonish when that group finishes, so that spot has options for breakfast or lunch items, and beer or coffee - so you can cover whatever you crave.  Or another nearby option would be Old Lompoc

For the 30 mile crew, ending at the zoo means that the crew could all decide to head back down Skyline and hit the tavern while shuttling someone back to their car(s).  Or you could drop down 26 to Jefferson and grab a reuben at the Goose Hollow Inn.

In keeping with my annual tradition, I'd be up for skipping the PURGING and just indulging in the SPLURGING, so I'll keep my eye on this thread for where the post-run eats are going to be.

I just realized that because I didn't start this thread, the details for where and when to meet isn't in the first post.  So here is the scoop.

1. Decide how far you plan to run

2. Meet at the end point for whatever distance you plan to run (see options below).

3. If you know how far you would like to run, post in this thread so that others know there will be someone else to carpool to the start with.

Time: Everyone will meet up around 8:30 am then carpool to the Newberry end of Wildwood for a 9:00am start with everyone.

The distances and finish point options are:

*~30 miles: Running the entire trail is 30.11 miles. Meet at the zoo (Vietnam Memorial parking lot) for this option.

*~25 miles: Meet at Lower MacLeay trailhead (end of NW Upshur) for this option.

*~21 miles: Meet at the NW 53rd Ave trailhead to Wildwood (http://explorepdx.com/forpark4.html). The point where Wildwood passes 53rd would be a 21 mile run.

*~17 miles: Meet at the gate at lower end of Saltzman, off Hwy 30.  Note: LOWER gate off hwy 30, NOT the upper gate off Skyline.

*~11 miles: Meet off Skyline Rd at the top of Springville Rd/Firelane 7/Gas Line Rd (http://explorepdx.com/forpark2.html). This option is just over 10 miles.

Food/water

We will drop off supplies (water, Gatorade and some snack foods) at a couple points along the route (definitely Germantown and 53rd Ave, and perhaps a 3rd location as well). You can carry additional supplies if you feel the need, but the drops are set up so that anyone wanting to run the distance can travel light.

Travel to start at Newberry

Keep in mind that Newberry Road is still washed out between Hwy 30 and the Wildwood Trailhead.  So when carpool groups head to the start, you will need to drive up Germantown to Skyline, then head over to Newberry and drive down to the trailhead.

Here's who I know is doing what:

Torrey, you should start a list of who is running which distance.

Torrey, you should start a list of who is running which distance.

I will if/when people post up their plans.  So far, no one has declared a distance here to compile in a list.  And there will likely be more folks responding on facebook, so it might be easier to track there.

I will give the 10-11 mile option a try, UNLESS it is dumping rain and is super muddy up there. In that case, I'll run the roads and hope to meet up at one of the Splurging points afterward.
