Forget the calendar that puts midwinter on December 21. That's the start of winter. It's middle comes 45-46 days later in early February. As in, right around today. Sure, the daylight is coming back, but winter doesn't officially end until sometime after Shamrock.
Which all means that it was pretty cool (no pun intended) that I counted 28 Lizards (and that might have been an undercount) on a night when I kept expecting the light drizzle descending on us to change to snowflakes at any moment.
