We are only a few weeks away from the start of this year's "summer" series, so it's time to release this info beyond just the latest issue of the Gazette.

This year will be similar to last year, where we score results and award prizes based on participation and rank.  The ranks are still based on how well male and female Lizards place against one another at each event—scores are awarded where the first finishing Lizard gets 100 point, the final Lizard gets 20, and the point in between are divided by however many show up for that race.

We will keep the overall ranking list, and count the best 5 of 9 races for each person to calculate their series standings.  The top 5 men and women will get a shot at “the big prizes”.

In addition to the top 5 ranked male and female Lizard, we will also be putting the top 5 male and female participants into the running for those prizes.  So even if you were the final Lizard in all 9 events, the fact that you did all of the events almost assures you will be amongst the top 5 participants. So, go fast or go often—either approach might help you score one of the “big prizes.”

1.  April 8—Dogwood Dash 5k, Milwaukie, $25  https://runsignup.co...R?remMeAttempt=

2.  April 29—Willamette Mission Trail 10k, $20 w/ discount code: TRL2017  https://www.signmeup...stration/117760

3.  May 13—Lake Run 10k, Lake Oswego, $40  http://www.lowomensc...RunRegistration

4.  May 29—Up The Lazy River 10k, West Linn, $25 w/ discount code: TRLSS  https://runsignup.co.../UpTheLazyRiver

5.  June 17—Backyard Half, White Salmon, $20  https://ultrasignup.....aspx?did=43348

6.  July 9—Outdoor Evening 5k, Beaverton, $5  https://www.raceentr...day-evenings-5k

7.  July 16—PJ’s to Pancakes 5k, West Linn, $8  http://westlinnorego...ncakes-run-walk

8.  August 6—McCubbin's Gulch Scramble, $35  http://www.xdogevent...bbinsgulch.html

9. Strava Challenge.  All that is needed to score in this race is a GPS-enabled watch and syncing your watch with Strava.  I know… forcing people to adopt athletic social media is cruel

The segment is called the “TRL SS Oaks Bottom 2.5K reroute”.  Link: https://www.strava.c...gments/14665676

Here’s the scoop on how this will work.

  • You can run it as many times as you want between April 9 and August 6
  • Your fastest time will be used for Summer Series scoring;
  • Cost is FREE!
  • Fits between the 2 regular checkpoints on the Wed night run—starts past church and ends before paved bike path at other end of Oaks Bottom—so you could in theory “race” this every week.
  • This is shorter than normal road races, so adds variety and is easier for people to attempt multiple times.

Here is the direct link to the Strava Challenge segment (race #9, "TRL SS Oaks Bottom Trail 2.5K"):

https://www.strava.c...gments/14134525

Since the segment is along a well-traveled public trail, Strava has already associated many existing efforts with it. When we tally the final Summer Series results, keep in mind that ONLY times run between April 9 and August 6 by TRL members will be considered for scoring purposes.

Note that even if you don't own a GPS enabled watch, you can still use the Strava app on your smartphone to record your segment time. (If you have neither, well congratulations for not giving in to the latest trends) :hairy: ^_^

Does anyone know if you can sign up at the Dogwood Dash on race morning?  I know on-line closes on April 6th, but couldn't find anything one way or another about race morning sign-up.

Are you thinking of running this Susan? That would be cool.

I am thinking about it.  It would be great to get out to a Red Lizard race and this looks like a good one for that.  Right now it would just be better if I could make the call the night before or morning of.

And because I know the inevitable question will come up about how scoring works, I am attaching the scoring spreadsheet.  That way all of you who need to dive in and check out formulas to understand the "magic" can see what the scoring system is all about.

If you do download this and check it out, ignore names and times that are in races yet to come.  I will admit that I just modified the spreadsheet from last year, so you will still see data from previous events in the spreadsheet tabs for races yet to come.  The only ones that are current is the first one for Dogwood Dash and the final one, which has the overall standings (which are the same as the scores from race 1 at this point).

The potentially confusing part about determining the top 10 is that the first 5 are based on the ranks you see listed.  Places 6-10 will be based on the number of races run.  At this point, only one race into the series, the people listed in spots 6-10 would be those people.  But once we get towards the mid-point of the series, when there are people who reach the 5 races that actually go towards their overall score, that is when someone who might have run 5 races faster than another person could be ahead of them in the standings, but if neither of them are in one of those first 5 spots, then we will look to the number of events participated in to determine the rankings from there.

So the more you race, the better chance you have of securing a spot in the top 10 (says the guy who skipped out on race #1...)
